Somatic (body- based) therapy for trauma, depression, and anxiety
TRE® stands for Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises. These are a series of simple exercises that help our bodies relax and release tension trauma or from the acute and accumulated stresses of life.
|
TRE consists of 7 simple exercises that are designed to lightly fatigue and stretch your core region (particularly, your psoas muscles), in order to induce what are called neurogenic tremors. These tremors help your body relax and release deeply held tension. Have you ever found your hands shaking or felt wobbly after a car accident (or a near miss)? Then you've experienced TRE!
Humans, like most mammals, have evolved this natural tremor response to discharge stress and energy after an upsetting event. As adults, we tend to interrupt or suppress this shaking reflex. This makes it more difficult for our bodies to fully relax and recover from stress. TRE can help your body remember how to access this natural shaking mechanism in a safe and controlled way. |
TRE has been effective for many people who struggle with the effects of trauma or accumulated everyday stress. It can help with chronic pain, emotional regulation and resiliency, and anxiety and depression. People who have experienced intense and acute stressors, such as natural disasters, accidents, domestic violence, or experienced trauma during war, have reported that TRE has helped reduce their PTSD symptoms.
TRE is based on the principles of Somatic Experiencing and polyvagal theory, which assume that stress and trauma affect us on both a psychological and physical level. Tremoring can help our physical bodies release tension, which signals to our nervous system that we are safe. After just a few guided sessions, most people can practice TRE on their own in their home. Sessions can be done in person in Athens, Georgia (USA) or online via Zoom. |
